Frequently Asked Questions

What is a lift station?

A lift station is a pumping station that’s purpose is to lift wastewater from one level to a higher level. The purpose is to either pass over obstruction, or to accommodate changes in elevation in route to either another lift station, or to a wastewater treatment facility.

How does a lift station work?

Lift stations are used to pump liquid, typically wastewater or sewage. The station pumps it from a lower elevation to a higher elevation using the laws of gravity to save on more intensive construction.

The sewage enters an underground well that contains float switches(typically four) which are placed at different levels and pumps. The float switches monitor and detect the volume of sewage that is in the station, when the sewage enters a point of the float, the pump turns on and pumps out the sewage upward through the pipes to exit the station.

Once the level pumps down to the lowest float, the pump turns off. If the pumps fail for any reason (clog, power failure, etc.) or can not keep up with an influx of waste, as the level rises, it reaches the alarm float designated to start the audible and visual alarm to notify of system failure. When the alarm turns on, it is time to call us for a service call!

Why do I need monthly maintenance on a lift station?

Monthly maintenance is a crucial part in upkeep of your sewage lift station. The monthly inspection allows our techs to inspect your lift station to ensure all parts of the station are properly functioning. It allows us to see problems that at the time, may be minor, but can be caught and corrected before a serious problem occurs with your lift station.

What is the difference between monthly inspection quarterly pumping of a lift station?

The monthly inspection; test and clean floats, inspect electrical panel for corrosion and damage. Inspect wiring for loose connections and/or damaged areas. Log hour meter readings and check phase balance for each pump. Take all amperage readings and check all aspects of the lift station to ensure proper functioning of all parts.

The quarterly pumping of a lift station; our pump truck vacuums out the lift station to remove any solids that remain in the station that the pumps could not get rid of to clean station and prevent bio-mat build up that could cause extra wear on your pumps and hinder the longevity of your pumps life.
